    Background-checked

Herringbone uses rectangular planks laid at 90° to each other. The ends meet in a stepped pattern. Chevron uses planks pre-cut at a 45° or 60° angle, so the ends meet in a continuous V.

Chevron is the cleaner, more formal look. It also costs more - the angled cuts mean specialized milling and 10-15% more waste. Expect to pay $3-5 more per square foot installed than a standard plank.

Herringbone is the work-horse. It's been in European homes for 400 years, it forgives small subfloor imperfections, and most premium oak engineered lines stock it.

Scale matters. In a small room, a wide-plank herringbone can fight the architecture. Use a narrower plank (3-4 inches) in rooms under 200 sq ft. Save the 6-inch chevron for the dining room.

Both patterns add about 2 days to a standard install. Plan accordingly.
