Measure your space (and add 10%)
Length × width per room, plus 10% for waste on plank goods and 15% on diagonal tile installs. Closets count. Stairs count double.
Identify how the room actually lives
Pets, kids, shoes-on or shoes-off, sun exposure, moisture. The room's daily reality, not the catalog photo.
Get inspired - and screenshot it
Pinterest, Instagram, magazines. Save 5–10 examples. Patterns will emerge: the species, tone, and plank width you keep gravitating to.
Define your budget - installed
Material price per square foot is half the story. See our budget guide for the realistic all-in number.

Look at them in your space, in your light, at the times of day you'll actually use the room. Photos lie. Samples don't.
Prep the space
Furniture removal
Decide what we move and what you handle. We can include furniture moving in your install quote. Empty closets and built-ins yourself.
Disconnect appliances
Refrigerators, washers, dryers, and gas ranges should be disconnected before our crew arrives. We can schedule a plumber if needed.
Window treatments and trim
Floor-length curtains get tied up. We'll handle quarter-round and shoe molding - baseboards stay put unless you're replacing them.
Acclimate the material
Hardwood and engineered hardwood deliver 48 hours before install and acclimate in the rooms they'll live in. LVP and tile don't need this.
Clear a staging path
We'll need a clear route from the truck to the work area, plus a 6×6 ft staging spot. Cover anything fragile within 10 feet.
Install day
Be reachable, not present
You don't need to be there the whole time, but the lead installer will call with one or two decisions (transition placement, seam direction).
Pets and small kids stay clear
Power tools, glue, dust, open trim nails. Most installs are easier if pets board for the day.
Doors may need trimming
New floors raise the finish height. Interior doors often need ½–¾ inch trimmed off the bottom. We handle that or coordinate with your handyman.
Ventilate during glue-down and finish work
Open windows, run fans. Most modern adhesives and finishes are low-VOC, but airflow makes a real difference in the first 24 hours.
Walk it with the lead before they leave
5-minute walk-through, every room, every transition. Note anything before sign-off - easier to fix while the crew is still there.
After install
Wait before walking heavy
Hardwood with a site-applied finish: 24 hours before socks, 72 hours before furniture. LVP and tile: walk same day, furniture next morning.
Felt-pad every piece of furniture
Yes, every piece. Heavier items (pianos, refrigerators) need wider felt pads or proper coasters. Worth 15 minutes.
Hold off on area rugs for 30 days
Hardwood needs to off-gas finish solvents. Rugs trap them and can leave a halo. Same goes for plastic mats.

Material-specific care guides are linked from every category page. The first month's routine is what saves the next 20 years.
Save your paperwork
Warranty, invoice, leftover material (one full box minimum). We keep a copy too, but yours unlocks claims fastest.
