The cheapest contractor in any market wins bids by using the cheapest underlayment. It's invisible after install, so most homeowners never know. But it shows up two ways: how the floor sounds when you walk on it, and how long it lasts.
Under LVP, we use a 1.5mm cross-linked polyethylene with a built-in vapor barrier. Under hardwood, a felt-paper underlayment for nail-down or a premium acoustic pad for floating engineered. Under carpet, an 8 lb 7/16″ rebond - not the 6 lb the big-box stores default to.
The difference: with a good underlayment, your floor sounds like a floor. With a bad one, it sounds like a parking deck - hollow, drummy, every footstep amplified. And bad underlayment compresses out in 3–5 years, leaving you with a creaky floor and no real fix.
We never line-item the underlayment separately. It's in the price. Always ask any competitor what underlayment they use - if they hesitate, that's your answer.
